 One of South East Asia’s most accessible destinations, Singapore is a popular stop off for those travelling onto Oz.Singapore is an island, country and city state which lies just above the equator. The British colonized it in 1815 and they continued to dominant the area for the next 150 years. The city was transformed from a disease-ridden backwater into a thriving trading port synonymous for its spices. The city continued to grow and prosper into the twentieth century, however it suffered during World War 11 when the Japanese invaded it. The British regained the area after the Japanese surrendered in 1945 but growing nationalism in the city meant that the right of rule was no longer theirs. During the 1950s the area moved towards self-government and in 1963 it joined a union with Malaysia. In 1965 however it retook its independence from Malaysia and its economic development was recommenced. Today the city one of the world's busiest ports and a magnet for shoppers.
